CMS SEO Comparison: Is Your CMS Hurting Your SEO? [Infographic]
If you’re a small business owner or non-profit manager with a website, you are probably using a CMS to run that website. CMSs help website owners to easily update their website and keep it looking sharp without having to know how to code. If you care about SEO, however, you should know that not all CMSs are created equal. And if you haven’t done a CMS SEO comparison, your CMS may be hurting your SEO without you even knowing about it.
What’s a CMS?
A Content Management System or CMS is simply a tool for managing all the content within a website. Popular CMSs like WordPress, Joomla!, and Drupal give organizations more control of their website, including the ability to customize it, or even alter its code.
What’s a CMS Got to Do With SEO?
Search Engine Optimization or SEO is a measure of how well-placed your website’s links are within search engine page results. Search engines don’t automatically rank your links and they don’t rank everyone’s links the same. In fact, search engines like Google use around 400 different factors to decide how authoritative a link is and where it should go in results pages.
As your website’s CMS governs everything about your website from its look and feel to its code and link structure, if your CMS doesn’t play well with search engines, neither will your website.

Because of this, some of the easiest to use CMSs are also the worst ones when it comes to SEO. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of middle ground when it comes to CMSs and SEO. A CMS is either highly customizable or it isn’t. For this reason, the open source CMSs rank highest in our comparison, because they are the most customizable CMSs on the market.
